Diamond Hawks Sweep Sunday To Open 4-0

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Taber Mongero's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 4-all deadlock with Middle Tennessee and propelled UNCW to an 8-4 win and complete a weekend sweep to open the season at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who edged St. John's earlier in the day, 6-5, ran their record to 4-0 with the twinbill sweep. The Blue Raiders, meanwhile, finished the weekend with a 1-3 mark.

Freshman reliever Zane Taylor (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for UNCW. Starter Ethan Chenault set career highs with five innings of work and 10 strikeouts.

Brycen Thomas (0-1) was tagged with the loss for MTSU. He allowed four runs on three hits and a walk over 3.2 innings of relief.

Jac Croom and Brooks Baldwin collected two hits apiece for UNCW while Dillon Lifrieri drove in three runs, two coming on his second home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Wyatt Morgan and Tatsunori Negishi each finished with two hits for MTSU. Morgan belted his first homer of the season with a man on in the fifth inning.

Against St. John's the Seahawks rallied from a five-run deficit after two innings to clip the Red Storm, 6-5.

The Seahawks plated five runs in the sixth as a bases-clearing double from Mongero scored three to tie the game and Ethan Baucom followed with a single to left to score Mongero with the eventual game-winning run.

Jason Hudak (1-0) was credited with the win and Cole Benton picked up the save.

Jake Alfaro (0-1) was saddled with the loss for SJU in relief.

Mongero finished with three hits, and he knocked in four runs. Matt Suggs also had three hits for the Seahawks.

How it happened vs MTSU: With one out in the seventh, Ron Evans lined a double to left and two batters later, Mongero drove him in from second with a single through the box and into centerfield.

How it happened vs St. John's: All with two out, the Seahawks scored five runs to take a 6-5 lead. Baldwin singled and Lifrieri doubled to left center. Evans and Suggs drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Mongero. Following Mongero's double, Baucom followed with a single to score Mongero with the final run of the inning.

Home Runs (Vs. MTSU): UNCW, Dillon Lifrieri (2, two-run, bottom of the fourth); MTSU Wyatt Morgan (1, one on, top of the fifth)

Up next: The Seahawks host Ball State on Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. in the first game of the Carolinas Coastline Classic. UNCW will also host Rutgers (Feb. 26) and Illinois (Feb. 27) next weekend.
