Holjes Shuts Down Red Storm As Diamond Hawks Rally

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Carter Holjes allowed one hit over 3.1 innings of relief to allow UNCW to wipe out a deficit and score eight runs over their final three at bats to knock off St. John's, 12-6, in college baseball action Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks won their second straight to open the season while the Red Storm slipped to 1-2 after splitting a doubleheader on the day. SJU edged Middle Tennessee, 6-5, earlier in the day.

For Holjes (1-0) it was his first career win as he shutdown the Red Storm in the sixth inning before closing out the game.

Geoff Mosseau (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and a pair of walks in an inning of work.

Ron Evans led UNCW with three runs batted in on two hits while Bryan Arendt and Ethan Baucom both added two hits on the day. Freshman John Newton belted a three-run homer, the first of this career.

David Glancy, Tate Ballestero and Kevin Michaels had two hits apiece for the Red Storm, which held a 6-4 lead after five and a half innings.

How It Happened: In the bottom of the sixth with two out and two on, Dillon Lifrieri doubled in a run to make it 6-5 and Evans followed with an infield single that scored two after the ball snuck through the middle infielders to make it 7-6 Seahawks. UNCW added two in the seventh and Newton's homer closed out the scoring in the ninth.

Home Runs: UNCW: John Newton (1, three-run, bottom of the eighth)

Inside The Box Score: The Seahawks swiped six bases for the first time since 2019 when they did so against Bryant … Brooks Baldwin and Noah Bridges both stole two and Lifrieri and Baucom added swipes of their own.

Next Game: The Seahawks retake the field on Sunday at 11 a.m. against St. John's and will close out the opening weekend with a 4 p.m. start against Middle Tennessee State. Both games will be streamed on FloSports.
