Seahawks Remain Perfect In Home Opener

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshman right-hander Kara Hammock continued her stellar start to her college career with another complete game as UNCW swept its home-opening doubleheader against Marist at Boseman Field on Friday.

Hammock, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week, tossed seven innings in Game 1 to beat the Red Foxes, 6-1. The Seahawks (6-0) used a four-run fifth inning to put away Marist, 7-2, in the second game.

The Seahawks continue the weekend tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against Bucknell (0-4) followed by a third game against Marist (0-2) scheduled for 3 p.m.

GAME 1 | UNCW 6, Marist 1

A two-run home run off the bat of catcher Anna Knox broke a 1-all tie in the bottom of the fifth inning as UNCW won its 2022 home opener.

Knox ignited a Seahawk offense that had two hits over the first four innings. UNCW score three more runs in the inning capped by junior Morgan Britt's bases-clearing, two-run double that put the Red Foxes away for good, 6-1.

Freshman Lauryn Richardson rocketed an RBI single past second base for the first run of the game in the second inning.

Hammock, who picked up her third win of the season, induced a game-ending grounder to second baseman Tayler Vitola to end the game.

GAME 2 | UNCW 7, Marist 2

A pair of doubles by senior first baseman Janel Gamache earned the Seahawks their sixth straight win to start the season.

Marist jumped ahead early with a two-run first inning while the Seahawks battled against Red Fox pitcher Meghan Haff, who did not allow a Seahawk hit until the third inning.

UNCW broke through in the third,  however, when Gamache roped a double that plated two runs to even the score at 2-all.

Richardson and Britt each thumped two-run RBI singles in a four-run fifth off Haff. The Seahawks cruised the rest of the way behind three scoreless innings from freshman Emily Winstead.
