Softball Splits Saturday Twinbill Against Bucknell, Marist

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNCW Seahawks split a Saturday doubleheader against Bucknell and Marist in Saturday softball action at Boseman Field.

The Bison (2-4) snapped the Seahawks' six-game winning streak in UNCW's first game, 8-4, scoring all their runs after the fifth inning. UNCW (7-1) rebounded against Marist (0-4) with its third win against the Red Foxes, 9-0, in five innings.

The Seahawks conclude the weekend tournament tomorrow against the Bison at 12:30 p.m. at Boseman Field.

GAME 1 | Bucknell 8, UNCW 4

Bucknell pulled away with a four-run eighth inning after the Bison sent the game into extras with an RBI single off the bat of Sarah Baluch in the top of the seventh.

Three straight Bison reached base to start the inning. Bison freshman Ava Aguilar lined out to right fielder Morgan Britt, but a run scored when the Seahawks misplayed the cutoff throw.

Junior Chase Knapp then broke the game open with a bases-clearing double to right-center followed by a Nicole Rivait single to push the Bison ahead for good.

The Seahawks plated two runs in the bottom of the third courtesy of back-to-back singles from senior Janel Gamache and freshman Lauryn Richardson.

GAME 2 | UNCW 9, Marist 0 (five innings)

Gamache lived up to her two-way billing with five scoreless innings in the circle and a three-run home run that stayed just inside in the left-field line.

The reigning Colonial Athletic Association Softball Player of the Week started the Seahawks off with an RBI single in the bottom of the first as part of a three-run frame for UNCW.

In the circle, Gamache struck out six Marist batters to pick up her first win of the season.

Freshman left fielder Arial Pearce, who went 3-for-3, delivered two RBI singles in the second and third inning.
