Baldwin Blast Wins It For UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – For the third straight season opener, UNCW walked it off as this time Brooks Baldwin launched a two-run shot to left in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-4 win over Middle Tennessee on Friday at Brooks Field.

MTSU dropped to 1-1 with the loss. Earlier in the day, the Blue Raiders knocked off St John's, 3-2.

UNCW reliever Hunter Hodges (1-0) earned the win while Trent Seibert (0-1) took the loss in relief.

The Seahawks play St. John's at 4 p.m. on Saturday while MTSU play the Red Storm at noon.

How it happened: Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Ethan Baucom, who finished with two hits including a double, singled to open the inning and Cam Murphy, a pinch runner, moved to second on a sac bunt by pinch hitter Kevin Pitarra. Freshman pinch hitter Bryan Arendt followed with a single to left one batter later to score Murphy with the tying run. Down in the count, 0-1, Baldwin got a pitch he could handle, and he slammed it over the wall in left center to end it. It was his third hit of the night.
