Women's Basketball Falls at W&M, 69-59

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary guard Sydney Wagner poured in a game-high 21 points to hand the UNCW women's basketball team a 69-59 setback in Colonial Athletic Association weeknight action at Kaplan Arena on Wednesday.

The Tribe upped its record to 8-15 overall and are 3-9 in the conference. UNCW fell to 3-19 overall and are 0-12 in the CAA.

Redshirt senior forward Micah Hoggatt recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Conyers, Ga., product was joined in double figures scoring by sophomore guard Mary McMillan's season-high 11 points while graduate guard Allie Best chipped in 10 points.

Wagner's scored 15 of her 21 points in the second half. The Phoenixville, Pa., product was aided by season-highs from graduate guard Kate Sramac (13 pts.) and sophomore center Kayla Beckwith (10 pts.).

UNCW trailed, 59-48, with 5:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. A 9-4 spurt cut the deficit to six points, 63-57, after Hoggatt connected on a jumper outside the paint with 1:22 to go.

The Tribe, who earned their second straight victory over the Seahawks, drained six free throws in the final 44 seconds to seal the 69-59 verdict.

In the first quarter, UNCW took an early lead, 10-5, at the 6:10 mark with back-to-back three-pointers from McMillan and Best.

William & Mary then nailed four three-pointers as part of a 17-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 22-14 lead at the 1:16 mark in the first quarter. 

The two rivals traded baskets for much of the second quarter. Graduate guard Casey Riley nailed a jumper with eight seconds on the clock to take a 34-27 lead into halftime for the Tribe.

The Seahawks continue their road trip on Friday, Feb. 18, at Towson. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at SECU Arena.
