Tribe Edges Past Seahawks, 65-63

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Graduate guard Riley Casey sank a pair of free throws as William & Mary edged out a 65-63 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks fell to 3-18 and are 0-11 in the CAA. The Tribe snapped a six-game losing skid to improve to 7-15 and 2-9 in the circuit.

"It was just a day where we didn't give up. I was so proud of the plays we made down the stretch," said UNCW Head Coach Karen Barefoot. "You want to play playing your best basketball come March. We're going to stick together and have that teal collar brand."

Graduate guard Carrie Gross scored 13 of her season-high 17 points in the fourth quarter. The Clinton, Md., product was joined in double figures scoring by redshirt-senior forward Micah Hoggatt (15 pts.) and graduate guard Sierra DaCosta (11 pts.)

Casey delivered 16 points to go with six assists. Freshman Dani McTeer (13 pts.) and redshirt-senior guard Sydney Wagner (11 pts.) joined Casey in double-digit points.

Gross gave the Seahawks the lead, 63-61, on a second chance putback with 31 seconds left in the game after the Seahawks came back from a 40-25 deficit with 6:14 in the third quarter.

Casey then converted an old-fashioned three-point play on the Tribe's next possession to reclaim a one-point lead with 26 ticks on the clock. The Brentwood, Tenn., product nailed both of her free throws with seven seconds to go after UNCW committed a turnover.

At the buzzer, a floater by guard Allie Best was off the mark to seal the 65-63 win for the Tribe.

Both teams travel to Williamsburg, Va., on Wednesday, Feb. 16 for a rematch at Kaplan Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
