Softball Sweeps Opening Weekend in Charleston

Charleston, S.C. – Senior first baseman Janel Gamache smashed her third home run of the weekend as the UNCW softball team completed the four-game sweep at the Charleston Southern Kickoff Tournament on Sunday at the CSU Softball Complex.

The Seahawks beat Toledo, 9-7, in eight innings after the Rockets scored in the bottom of the seventh. UNCW then polished off the weekend with a 6-2 victory at CSU in the second game on Sunday.

"This weekend, our team was able to separate each game. They were all in every game which had a lot to do with our success," said Kristy Norton, the Seahawk's tenth-year head coach. "I'm sure this weekend's impactful experience is something we can reference throughout the year, but in the meantime, the girls can enjoy this."

UNCW fashioned a perfect 4-0 overall record to conclude the weekend. The Rockets dropped to 2-3 overall while the Buccaneers fell to 1-4 on the year.

GAME 1 (8 innings) | UNCW 9, Toledo 7

The Seahawks plated four runs with two outs in the eighth inning to sweep the weekend series against Toledo, 9-7.

Three straight singles by graduate catcher Anna Knox, freshman Arial Pearce, and sophomore Tayler Vitola began the onslaught as six consecutive Seahawks reached base.

Freshman right-hander Kara Hammock (2-0) tossed seven innings for the second straight day.

With the game tied at 4-all in the bottom of the seventh, Toledo senior Anna Dixon doubled to right to score freshman Sidney Griffith and send the game into extra innings.

After UNCW plated four runs in the extra frame, Toledo responded with two quick runs on a pair of singles.

Freshman right-hander Emily Winstead entered in relief and stranded the winning runs on second and third base to seal the win.

GAME 2 | UNCW 6, Charleston Southern 2

Gamache launched a three-run shot over dead-center to flip a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 advantage for the Seahawks in the top of the third inning.

A two-run, round-tripper off the bat of senior outfielder Camryn Dean and an RBI single from Arial Pearce cemented UNCW's 6-2 victory in the top of the fourth.

Junior Amberlyn Pearce, who picked up the win, threw five scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts and two walks.

GAME NOTES: Gamache has three home runs on the season … The Seahawks have won four straight games for the first time since Apr. 17-21, 2021 … Winstead pitched 8.1 innings across three games, allowing four earned runs ….
