Gamache Powers Softball To Opening Day Sweep

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A big day by senior two-way player Janel Gamache highlighted a season-opening sweep for the UNCW softball team in the CSU Kickoff Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks won their season opener against Toledo, 6-5, in walk-off fashion with a two-run home run off the bat of Gamache. The Exeter, R.I. product, also knocked home a run to jumpstart a four-run fifth inning in the second game at Charleston Southern to win, 5-0.

"Today was just a glimpse of how hard this team has worked since they arrived in August," said UNCW tenth-year Head Coach Kristy Norton. "The girls did a really nice job executing their offensive and pitching plans today."

The Seahawks now stand 2-0 on the season and have won their road opener for the fifth time in six years. Toledo dropped to 2-2 while CSU fell to 1-3 on the year.

GAME 1 | UNCW 6, Toledo 5

Gamache led the Seahawks with her second career multi-home run game, including the game-winning, two-run blast to left-center in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Toledo, 6-5.

Freshman right-hander Emily Winstead pitched 5.1 innings of two-run ball in relief of Gamache to pick up the win in her Seahawk debut.

The Rockets took the lead, 5-4, in the top of the seventh inning when senior third baseman Dayna Denner singled in two runs. The advantage only served to set the stage for Gamache in the bottom of the inning.

After junior outfielder Amberlyn Pearce walked, Gamache came to the plate with the Seahawks down to their final out. On a 2-2 count, the senior launched a homer over the left-center wall to seal the win for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a single up the middle by freshman outfielder Elizabeth Winstead to plate sophomore middle infielder Tayler Vitola.

Gamache clubbed her first round-tripper of the season to dead-center in the top of the third.

GAME 2 | UNCW 5, Charleston Southern 0

Junior infielder Mary Sobataka capped a four-run fifth inning with her first home run of the season to power the Seahawks to a 5-0 win against CSU in the second game of the season-opening doubleheader.

Freshman pitcher Kara Hammock tossed a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts in her college debut.

Gamache continued her stellar start with an RBI single in the top of the fifth to start the scoring after back-to-back singles from Pearce and Vitola.
