Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Streak Hits Double Digits On Jersey Shore

WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – Sophomore guard Trazarien White scored 14 of his game-high 16 points in the second half as the UNCW men's basketball team increased its winning streak to 10 games by beating Colonial Athletic Association newcomer Monmouth, 68-55, in the conference opener for both teams early Wednesday at the OceanFirst Bank Center.

The Seahawks raised their record to 11-3 with the key road victory on the Jersey Shore. UNCW returns to Trask Coliseum for its CAA home opener on Saturday with a 2 p.m. New Year's Eve matchup against another league newbie, Hampton.

Monmouth dropped to 1-13 with Wednesday's loss. The Hawks have not won since topping Manhattan, 76-69, back on Dec. 4 in Riverdale, N.Y.

The Seahawks, who own the seventh longest winning streak among NCAA Division I schools, are in the middle of a stretch of four road dates in five games. UNCW shot 51.7 percent in the second half to escape with the 13-point decision against the Hawks.

White wound up connecting on 8-for-12 from the floor to lead all scorers in the contest. Junior playmaker Donovan Newby collected 13 points and sophomore guard Nick Farrar contributed 11 points off the bench to give the Seahawks three in double digits.

Junior forward Myles Foster and junior forward Klemen Vuga had 12 points apiece for the Hawks, who shot 36.4 percent on the day.

"Any win you get on the road in league play, you have to be happy with it," said third-year UNCW Head Coach Takayo Siddle. "I'm glad we were able to get out of here with a win. Monmouth has a tough team…I knew they would come in here, be physical and compete.

"I think we were a little rusty coming off the Christmas break. We have to continue to work to get better on both ends of the floor and try to take a step forward.

"Our transition defense was poor. Our ball containment was poor. We were able to get some timely stops when we needed them when the momentum was going into their favor. We need to get back in the gym and get better."

The Seahawks, who won their third straight true road game, led wire-to-wire against the Hawks and never let Monmouth get closer than eight points in the second half.

After building a 19-point lead with 5:52 left to play, the Seahawks watched as the pesky Hawks fought back, narrowing the deficit to 46-38 with 11:18 left on a Vuga bucket inside. Newby buried a timely three-pointer, however, on the next possession and Farrar added a basket inside to push the margin back to 51-38 midway through the period.

UNCW's bench came up big again for the Seahawks, outscoring the opposition, 33-8. Six players scored at least seven points for the winners.

Despite three starters – White, Amari Kelly and Noah Ross – being saddled with two personal fouls, the Seahawks jumped out to a 31-20 advantage at halftime and held off several runs by the Hawks in the final 20 minutes.

Farrar was huge for the Seahawks in the first half, coming off the bench to collect nine points and two rebounds. UNCW scored the first seven points of the contest and after Monmouth misfired on its first five field goal attempts, stretched the lead to 15-6 on Farrar's conventional three-point play with 10:40 left in the opening frame.

Monmouth used a 6-2 mini-run and climbed within 24-18 on Vuga's layup at 4:20. But Maleeck Harden-Hayes converted both ends of a bonus situation and Jamarii Thomas converted an acrobatic layup to get the margin back to double figures, 28-18, with 1:51 left in the first frame.

Junior guard Jamarii Harvey wrapped up the scoring in the first half with a trifecta in front of the Monmouth bench with 13 seconds left to lift the Seahawks to an 11-point advantage at the break.
