Seahawks Finish Off Perfect December

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Long before the rest of the nation began to ring in the new year, the UNCW men's basketball team decided to celebrate a little early, cruising past Colonial Athletic Association newcomer Hampton, 82-65, early Saturday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks extended their winning streak to 11 games to move to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the CAA with the lopsided win. UNCW's streak is the sixth best in the NCAA Division I ranks. The Pirates from Hampton, Va., are 3-11 and 0-2 in the loop.

More notably, the 2022-23 club became the first team in school history to close out the month of December with a clean record. The Seahawks went 6-0 in the final month of the calendar year, winning the six games by an average of 13.7 points per game.

Sophomore guard Jamarii Thomas of UNCW poured in a career-high 17 points to lead all scorers. He went 4-for-8 from the floor and added 7-for-8 at the free throw line to eclipse his previous high of 16 against North Texas on Nov. 27 in The Bahamas and collected five assists in the all-around game. Sophomore guard Trazarien White tacked on 15 points and senior forward Amari Kelly finished with 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Senior guards Marquis Godwin and Deuce Dean paced Hampton with 16 points apiece. Sophomore guard Jordan Nesbitt pitched in 12 points for the Pirates.

"I'm proud of the guys," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "Hampton has very good guards and we knew that coming into the game. We knew we were going to have to keep those guys in check and for the most part, we did.

"We got off to good start and relaxed a little bit. In the second half, we put our feet on the gas pedal and pulled away with a double-digit win."

Meeting the Pirates for the first time since Nov. 25, 2012, UNCW scored the first 14 points of the contest and led by 10 points at halftime, 42-32, before turning back several Hampton runs in the second half. The Seahawks shot 60 percent in the final period and wound up at 58.7 percent for the game.

The Seahawks came out of the locker room blazing, draining their first eight field goal attempts of the contest and led, 23-6, just 7:36 into the contest before the Pirates settled down. Keyed by a pair of back-to-back three-pointers by Noah Ross, UNCW scored the first 14 points of the game and seized control early.

UNCW shot 57.7 percent in the opening 20 minutes and the bench provided 15 points to help the Seahawks get off to a strong start. Ross scored eight points and sophomore guard Thomas added eight markers for the Seahawks, who had five steals in the first period.

A bucket inside by Kelly at the 12:24 mark of the first half gave the Seahawks a 23-6 cushion before the Pirates got untracked. Hampton closed the gap to 38-32 with just over a minute left in the first period, but Maleeck Harden-Hayes converted both ends of a bonus situation and Thomas sank a floater in the lane to close out the half and give the Seahawks a 10-point advantage at the break.

In the second half, the Pirates chopped the deficit to seven points on three occasions, including a layup by the slippery Dean with 10:15 to go that helped Hampton climb within, 57-50.

A pair of free throws by Kelly and Thomas on the other end, however, pushed the margin back to 61-50 at the 10-minute mark and the lead swelled to as many as 22 points down the stretch.

The Seahawks, in the midst of four road games in five outings, hit the road again on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. matchup against Elon at the Schar Center in Elon, N.C.
