Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Zip Past Visiting Trojans

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW opened the game by scoring the first 15 points and never looked back to blow past NCAA Division II Mount Olive, 94-47, in men's basketball action Monday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks snapped a two-game losing streak and will carry their 2-3 record to Nassau, The Bahamas, this weekend for the Baha Mar Nassau Championship. UNCW opens play in the Thanksgiving tourney on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. tip against Missouri State. Monday's contest counted as an exhibition game for the Trojans, 1-4.

"We needed a night like this," said third-year UNCW Head Coach Takayo Siddle. "When you come off the road like we and play the opponents that we did, you start to question and second guess yourself. We needed a game like this to get our confidence and our mojo back.

"It was a good night. Everybody scored. We were having fun. I thought that was important for us."

Twelve players scored for the Seahawks, who shot a robust 56.2 percent on the night. Junior guard Nick Farrar led all scorers with 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting, while freshman guard Nolan Hodge recorded the first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, sophomore guard Jamarii Thomas collected 12 points and sophomore guard Eric Van Der Heijden finished with 11.

Freshman guard Colin Radcliffe paced UMO with 12 points. The Trojans managed just 26.9 percent on the night on 18-for-67 from the field.

The Seahawks converted their first five field goal attempts and jumped out front, 15-0, before Jikari Johnson's jumper on the right below got the Trojans on the board. UMO missed its first seven shots until Johnson's shot with 15:06 on the clock.

The lead swelled to 20 points, 26-6, on a free throw by Thomas at the 9:20 mark of the first half as UNCW continued its hot start. The Seahawks went on to build a 48-18 lead at halftime behind 58.3 percent shooting.

Eight different Seahawks scoring the first half and UNCW scored 23 points off 12 UMO turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

The Seahawks poured it on, 65-28, at 10:35 when junior guard Donovan Newby soared in for back-to-back layups and achieved their largest lead of the contest, 85-33, when walk-on guard Riley Berkoff dropped in a pair of free throws with 1:16 left to play.
