Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Bounce Bears In Baha Mar Debut

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The UNCW men's basketball team's first victory in five tries over Missouri State couldn't have come at a better time.

Sophomore guard Trazarien White racked up a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds and anchored four players in double figures to power the Seahawks over the Bears, 68-54, early Friday in the second game of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship at the Baha Mar Convention Center.

The Seahawks evened their record at 3-3 on the young season with their second straight win and will face Vermont in Saturday's semifinals in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The Bear stands 2-2 and will play Ball State in a loser's bracket game at noon on Saturday.

"I thought Missouri State was the tougher team in the first half," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's third-year head coach. "I talked to the guys about that. My message was just to toughen up, get the rebounds, get the 50-50 balls and make sure we took care of those things. I felt good about us winning if we did.

"Defensively, we stepped up and that created some offense for us. We shared the ball well with 13 assists."

White went 4-for-12 from the floor and 8-for-11 at the free throw line for his game-high total and third double figure outing of the campaign. Sophomore guard Jamarii Thomas added 13 points, junior guard Donovan Newby chipped in 11 and senior guard Maleeck Harden-Hayes finished with 10.

Colorado State transfer Kendle Moore paced the Bears with 12 points and reserve center Dawson Carper contributed 10.

In the first of three games in the MTE tournament, the Seahawks started slow, but finished with a flourish to race past the Bears of the Missouri Valley Conference. UNCW crept out to a 29-28 edge at halftime and put on a clinic in the final 20 minutes to move on to the semifinals.

The Seahawks shot 52.0 percent in the second half and held MSU to just 31.8 percent and pulled away down the stretch from the reeling Bears.

Midway through the stanza, MSU's Dalen Ridgnal connected on a jumper to help the Bears climb within, 45-42, with 12:13 remaining.

UNCW then gained some breathing room with a 7-0 spurt, extending the advantage to double digits, 54-43, on a layup by Shykeim Phillips.

The Seahawks posted their longest lead of the game, 68-53, when Phillips sank a jumper on the left side with just under one minute left to play. The bucket capped a 9-0 run in the final three minutes that sealed the victory for Siddle's club.

Following a sluggish start, the Seahawks grabbed a 29-28 edge at the break behind White, who
scored nine points in the opening 20 minutes.

UNCW misfired on its first seven field goal attempts before Jamahri Harvey's triple on the right wing broke the ice at 13:50. After Phillips canned a jumper at the free throw line, the Bears scored six unanswered points for their largest lead of the period, 15-7, courtesy of a shot high off the glass by Moore.

The two teams traded buckets for the next seven minutes when White came alive. He scored the final five points of the half, including a running jumper with 38 seconds left to give the Seahawks a 29-25 edge. MSU's Alston Mason countered, however, with a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to slice UNCW's lead to just one at intermission.
