Gross Leads Seahawks Over Panthers, 71-51

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Graduate guard Carrie Gross' 16 points anchored four UNCW players in double-figures scoring as the Seahawks downed Division II foe Virginia Union, 71-51, in women's basketball exhibition action on Saturday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.
 
Gross converted 6-of-13 attempts from the floor, along with four free throws, while adding a team-high four assists and three rebounds for the Seahawks, who shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) in the game.
 
Freshman Sammy Ackles poured in 15 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting and collected two steals and a block on the defensive end.
 
Graduate forward Micah Hoggatt delivered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard Evan Miller collected 12 points in 21 minutes off the bench.
 
Panthers guard Taniah Johnson scored nine of her team-high 17 points in the second half. Virginia Union forward Ny Langley posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 boards.
 
The Seahawks were ahead, 36-25, at halftime before the Panthers, who shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63) as a team, cut the lead to single digits, 48-39, on a Langley three-pointer with 3:25 left in the third quarter.
 
UNCW responded with a seven-point spurt, including five points by Gross, to swell the lead back to 16, 55-39, with 1:35 left in the period.
 
Ackles converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Seahawks its first double-digit lead, 25-15, with 5:15 left in the second half. The Panthers capped an 8-2 spurt with a three-pointer by Jhakia Gist to shrink their deficit to four with 3:25 remaining before intermission.
 
UNCW responded with a 9-2 run over the final three minutes of the second period to take an 11-point point advantage into the break.
 
The Seahawks moved to 21-13 in exhibitions and next prepare for their regular season opener vs. Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. at Trask Coliseum.
