Seahawks Drop 57-46 Verdict in Season Opener

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Lenoir-Rhyne used a 12-2 run in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead and outlast UNCW, 57-46, in the women's basketball season opener on Monday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks dipped to 0-1 on the new season. The game was an exhibition for the Bears.

Lenoir-Rhyne shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the floor while UNCW converted 27.4 percent (17-of-62) from the field.

Graduate guard Carrie Gross poured in a career-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting for the Seahawks and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.

The Bears were led by Blaikley Crooks' 20-point effort. The junior guard was joined in double figures by graduate guard Azariah Fields' 12 markers.

The teams played close to start with neither squad holding more than a six-point advantage in the first quarter that concluded with a 19-14 Bears advantage.

Junior guard Mary McMillan hit a jumper at the 5:39 mark in the second period to cut the deficit to 22-20, but the Bears outscored the Seahawks by 10 points the rest of the half to take a 34-22 lead into the intermission.

Trailing 45-33 after the third period, the Seahawks cut Lenoir-Rhyne's lead to eight with four points to start the final period, but the Bears put the game on ice with five consecutive points to push their advantage back to double digits.

The Seahawks next hit the road for the first time this season on Sunday when they travel to Greenville, N.C. for a matchup at East Carolina at 2 p.m.
