Burroughs, Henry Lead UNCW Past Hampton

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – UNCW's Kayla Burroughs scored her third goal in her last four games in the 82nd minute as the Seahawks edged Hampton, 2-1, in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Wanner Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 6-5-1 overall with a 2-2 record in CAA play. The Pirates fell to 2-9 overall and are 0-4 in the conference.

UNCW registered season-highs with 26 shots and 22 corner kicks, including 17 in the second half.

Hampton recorded three of its four shots in the second half. Pirates' goalkeeper Alexis Deveaux collected a career-high 13 saves.

Junior midfielder Madison Henry totaled a career-high seven shots, including the Seahawks' first goal at the 15-minute mark courtesy of an assist by Morgan Nanni to give UNCW an early lead. Henry, who finished with three points, has posted at least one point in five of her last seven games.

Hampton evened the score in the 59th minute on a goal by Taylor Oliver from roughly 10 yards out. The sophomore defender was aided by the Pirates' Kyla McCurdy on the score.

With the game even, 1-all, Burroughs drilled her fourth goal of the season from an assist by Henry to escape Williamsburg with a narrow victory.

The Seahawks begin their final homestand of the season on Thursday, Oct. 6, vs. Elon at 7 p.m.
