Seahawks Open Road Trip With Loss At Charleston

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Charleston exploded for 24 unanswered points early in the game and went on to post an 87-59 victory over UNCW in women's basketball action on Sunday at TD Arena,
 
The Seahawks, 3-13 overall and 0-5 in the CAA, next travel to Hempstead, N.Y., on Tuesday (Feb. 1) to battle Hofstra on Long Island. The Cougars, 11-8 and 3-5, snapped a two-game skid and improved to 4-6 at home this season.
 
Graduate guard Sierra DaCosta led three Seahawks in double figures with 12 points. Senior guard Rinnah Green added 11 points and graduate guard Allie Best finished with 10.
 
The Cougars featured three players with 20+ points. Junior guard Jenna Annecchiarico (22), Zoe McCrary (20) and Latrice Perkins (20) combined for 62 of the team's 87 points. Senior Arynn Eady added a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
 
After Allie Best sank a three-pointer at the nine-minute mark to give the Seahawks a brief 5-1 advantage, the Cougars cranked up the defense and reeled off 24 straight points over a seven-minute stretch to jump out to a 25-5 cushion.
 
Several of the points in the spurt came off Seahawk turnovers. UNCW committed 15 turnovers in the first quarter and the Cougars turned those miscues into 18 points and a 28-11 margin heading into the second period. Charleston finished the game with 35 points off 33 Seahawk turnovers.
 
DaCosta scored on a runner and three-pointer early in the second quarter to close the gap to 30-16 with 8:15 left in the first half, but the Cougars responded to carry a 47-27 lead into intermission.
 
It was all Charleston in the second half as the margin swelled to as many as 32 points on three occasions. The last time came with 4:30 left to play when Anika McGarity converted a driving layup to give Charleston an 85-53 bulge.
 
The Seahawks and Cougars play the rematch on Sunday, Feb. 27, at Trask Coliseum in Wilmington.
 
Game Notes: The Cougars snapped a five-game losing streak to the Seahawks…UNCW defeated Charleston three times one year ago…UNCW shot 44.4 percent and Charleston finished at 47.9 percent…Green and Dejah Carter each grabbed seven rebounds…The Cougars entered the contest ranked first in scoring offense in the CAA...Charleston came up with 26 steals on the day…DaCosta added four rebounds and five assists to her stat line.
