Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dickey, Skinner Lead Delaware, 78-69

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Reigning Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Player of the Year Jasmine Dickey poured in 23 points and Tyi Skinner pitched in 20 points as Delaware raced past UNCW, 78-69, in a conference game on Wednesday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Blue Hens maintained their lock on second place in the CAA and raised their record to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the loop. The Seahawks dropped their fifth straight and dipped to 3-12 in all games and 0-5 in the CAA.

Dickey, a senior guard, and Skinner, a sophomore guard, did most of the damage on the night for the Blue Hens, who shot 50.8 percent from the floor. Redshirt senior forward Ty Battle added a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds – her 11th of the season - for UD's potent attack.

Graduate guard Sierra DaCosta paved the way for the Seahawks with 23 points, while Redshirt senior forward Micah Hoggatt added 14.

"We have to keep focused," said Karen Barefoot, UNCW's fifth-year head coach. "They're a good team. I thought our matchup zone was good, but we weren't chasing down rebounds. We have to figure out how to get tougher on the boards. We fought hard to get back into the game, but we need to do that throughout the game."

Playing the second leg of a four-game road trip, the Blue Hens jumped out to a 19-11 advantage after the first quarter behind the active play of Dickey. The two-time CAA Player of the Week honoree scored the first seven points of the game for the Blue Hens and wound up with nine points in the opening frame as Delaware took control early.

The Seahawks closed the gap to 26-22 late in the second quarter on baskets by DaCosta and Hoggatt, but the Blue Hens scored 11 of the final 15 points in the period to take a 37-26 advantage into intermission.

UNCW was still hanging around early in the third quarter when the Blue Hens broke the game open. Dickey capped a 13-4 spurt on a bucket with 48 seconds left to give Delaware a 60-44 cushion, the Blue Hens' largest lead of the contest.

The Seahawks whittled away at the deficit late in the fourth quarter and scored the final 14 points of the game, but Delaware had enough of a margin to bounce back from a Sunday loss at CAA frontrunner Drexel.

The Seahawks open a four-game road trip on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022, with a 2 p.m. tip at Charleston. Barefoot's club then travels to Hofstra, Drexel and Delaware in the challenging road swing.
