Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Seahawks Run Streak To Nine In Beantown

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Another road game. Another come-from-behind win for one of the nation's hottest clubs.

Senior guard Jaylen Sims led four players in double figures with 18 points as the Colonial Athletic Association-leading UNCW men's basketball team rallied from 12 points down to get past stubborn Northeastern, 74-68, late Monday night, extending the team's winning streak to nine games.

The two teams turn around and play again in Wilmington on Thursday (Jan. 27, 2022) in a rescheduled game due to a postponement on Jan. 5, 2022.

The Seahawks increased their record to 12-5 overall and 6-0 in the CAA with the victory. The Huskies freefalled to 0-8 and 6-12 after losing their eighth in a row.

Sims, a senior guard from Charlotte, N.C., led the team in scoring for the eighth time this season, but it wasn't easy. He overcame foul problems late in the game, playing with four personals, and wound up hitting 4-of-9 from the floor and 7-of-8 at the free throw line, including the back breaker with just over a minute left that provided the separation needed to help the Seahawks remain the only unbeaten team in the conference.

Sims became the second Seahawk in as many games to reach the 1,000-point plateau in scoring. His three-pointer with 16:10 left in the game helped him reach the milestone and join teammate Jaylen Fornes, who went over 1,000 points on Saturday, on the impressive list.

Three other players reached double figures for the Seahawks, who shot 40 percent in each half. Fornes and graduate guard Mike Okauru added 15 points apiece and junior guard Shykeim Phillips, the CAA's Co-Player of the Week, finished an all-around game with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Redshirt junior forward Chris Doherty anchored the Huskies with a game-high 19 points, followed by sophomore guard Jahmyl Telfort with 15 points, redshirt senior guard Shaquille Walters with 13 and sophomore forward Coleman Stucke with 12.

"I could tell we were fatigued and a little beat up," UNCW head coach Takayo Siddle said of his surging club. "We had to gut that one out and that's exactly what we did. I think everyone's contributed to every win we've had on this road trip and I'm just so proud of them.

"We had to stay in their face. Our pressure overall was really good and it created some offense for us"

After trailing, 38-36, at halftime, the Seahawks were still behind by three points with 10 minutes remaining before rallying down the stretch for their fourth come-from-behind win in as many games.

Telfort's bucket with 10:01 put the Huskies ahead, 54-51, before the momentum shifted for the Seahawks, who held the Huskies without a field goal during a crucial six-minute stretch.

Reserve forward Amari Kelly came off the bench to provide the spark for the Seahawks. The Duquesne transfer started an eight-point spurt with a layup with 9:02 on the clock and Fornes' third three-pointer of the game gave UNCW a 59-54 edge at 8:29.

The Seahawks led by three points, 63-60, when Phillips converted a pair of free throws and Sims followed with his decisive trey with 1:12 on the clock to extend the margin to 68-60. As he's done throughout this memorable seven days, Sims knocked down four free throws in the final 45 seconds as the Seahawks, picked to finish ninth in the conference standings, continued to defy the pundits.

The Huskies led by as many as 12 points midway through the first period before the Seahawks battled back to narrow the advantage to two points at the break, 38-36.

After UNCW opened the game with a 7-4 edge, the Huskies reeled off nine straight points to grab a 13-7 lead on a Doherty bucket inside. The Huskies then raised the margin to 12 points with 9:22 left in the first half when Jason Strong canned a turnaround jumper as the lead swelled to 24-12.

But the Seahawks rallied at the end of the period when Okauru dropped in a pair of free throws and Phillips fired in a baseline jumper before the buzzer sounded to cut the lead to 38-36 at intermission.
