Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Sizzling Seahawks Post 10th Straight Victory

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior guard Jaylen Sims continued his stellar play, scoring a team-high 20 points and sinking the game-clinching free throws in the final two minutes, to lift UNCW to its 10th consecutive men's basketball victory, 67-62, on Thursday night in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup against visiting Northeastern.

The Seahawks, kicking off a home stand of three games in five days, improved to 13-5 overall and remained unbeaten in the CAA with an unblemished 7-0 record. UNCW has not lost in 47 days dating back to a setback at Jacksonville on Dec. 11, 2021.

The reeling Huskies suffered their 10th straight loss and plummeted to 6-13 and 0-9 in the league. The loss to the Seahawks was their second in four days after UNCW handing the Huskies a 74-68 defeat Monday night in Boston.

"I'm proud of the guys. As the top dog, you're going to get everybody's best punch," said Takayo Siddle, who is 10-5 at home in his two seasons on the North Carolina coast. "We got off to a good start and let our guard down a little bit at the end of the half, and they outcompeted us.

"We refocused in the second half and came back out with some good spurts. Guys made big plays. It was a total team effort. We finished down the stretch once again."

The versatile Sims shared game-high scoring honors with his 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. Junior guard Shykeim Phillips contributed 17 and graduate guard Jaylen Fornes had 14 off the bench for the Seahawks, who shot 50.9 percent on the night.

The Huskies were led by sophomore guard Jahmyl Telfort's 20 points. Graduate guard Nikola Djogo pitched in 17 and sophomore forward Coleman Stucke finished with 10.

In Thursday's win, the Seahawks called on the same formula that has resulted in the second longest winning streak in school history. The 2015-16 club won 11 in a row en route to a 25-8 campaign and CAA championship.

After going into the locker room with a 34-29 edge at the break and clinging to a 40-37 lead early in the final period, the Seahawks gained the separation they needed to get over the hump.

Phillips, the CAA's reigning Player of the Week, connected on a short jumper in the lane that opened a 10-0 run and Fornes made a bucket with 14:50 remaining to put the Seahawks on top, 50-37. During the big stretch, the Seahawk defense came up with nine straight stops as the Huskies were held scoreless over a 6:37 span.

"Our guys know that to be the team we want to be, we have to defend," added Siddle. "They took it upon themselves to lock down and get some stops."

The Seahawks were still in charge, 56-44, after a short Phillips jumper with 8:27 left to play until the upset-minded Huskies used an 11-2 spurt to close the gap to three points. Telfort scored inside with 3:36 on the clock to narrow the deficit to 58-55.

Sims responded, however, with a key basket on the right elbow and Fornes canned a three-pointer as the lead swelled back to eight points, 63-55, at the 2:40 mark. Sims then calmly sank 4-of-5 free throws the rest of the way to nail down the team's seventh win eight home outings this season.

The Seahawks play the second leg of a three-game home stand on Saturday with a 7 p.m. tip-off against Hofstra at Trask Coliseum. The Pride holds down third place on the CAA leaderboard behind UNCW (7-0) and Towson (6-2).
