Tigers Down Seahawks In CAA Tilt

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Visiting Towson used a second quarter burst and decided rebounding advantage to defeat the shorthanded UNCW women's basketball team, 72-49, in Colonial Athletic Association action early Sunday at Trask Coliseum.

The Tigers improved to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in the CAA with the road victory after splitting its southern road trip. The Seahawks, returning to action this week following a Covid-19 pause, fell to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Senior forward Allie Kubek, the CAA's reining Player of the Week, led the way for the Tigers with 21 points, going 6-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-12 at the charity stripe. Aleah Nelson added 14 points and Ryann Evans racked up a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior forward Micah Hoggatt reached double figures for the seventh time with a team-high 16 for the Seahawks, who dressed just eight players. Graduate guard Sierra DaCosta chipped in 13 points and senior guard Carrie Gross had 11.

"Give Towson credit," said UNCW head coach Karen Barefoot, "they were the aggressor and were very physical. Today, we got a little gassed down the stretch and they made some big shots.

"We let them get too far ahead. I feel like they got us off our rhythm. When you play teams like Towson, you have to be locked in the whole time."

The Tigers, tied for third place with Northeastern in the CAA standings, scored the first six points of the contest and bolted out to an early lead after the Seahawks missed their first seven field goal attempts.

After Gross brought the Seahawks within 10-9, the Tigers went on a 7-0 mini-run to build a 17-9 advantage. Kubek capped the spurt with a spinning shot with 1:13 left in the first quarter for the eight-point lead.

The Seahawks responded with six straight points and Hoggatt's layup with seven seconds remaining in the quarter closed the gap to 17-15 at the end of the first period.

But the Tigers scored the first seven points of the second quarter to push the margin to 24-17 and then scored the final nine points of the stanza to build a 35-22 cushion at intermission.

UNCW could get no closer than 11 points in the second half. Towson's largest lead came with 2:04 remaining in the game when Gary made the second of two free throws as the margin ballooned to 70-43.

Key Moment: After Gross sliced the deficit to 26-22 with 3:07 showing in the first half, the Tigers ended the period by scoring the final nine points. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas kicked off the spurt with a driving layup and Anissa Rivera capped the rally with a three-pointer at 2:10.

Game Notes:
  • Hoggatt reached double figures for the fourth time in the last five games.
  • DaCosta hit for double digits for the fourth straight contest. She has 12 double-figure games this season.
  • Towson, one of the top transition clubs in the nation, totaled 18 fast break points.
  • The Tigers shot 46 percent and made 8-of-26 from long distance. The Seahawks connected on 32 percent and made just 1-of-12 from deep.
  • Both teams scored 30 points in the paint on the afternoon.
  • UNCW made all 10 of its free throw attempts as Gross, DaCosta, Hoggatt and Gamble were all perfect at the line.
