Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joe Browning

Eight Is Great For Seahawks At Towson

TOWSON, Maryland – Eight points down at Charleston. Thirteen behind at James Madison. Twelve back at Towson. Never mind the deficit, the UNCW men's basketball team continues to defy the odds after moving to 3-0 on its current conference road trip.

The resilient Seahawks rallied in the second half to force overtime and remained the only unbeaten team in the Colonial Athletic Association with a hard-earned 81-77 overtime victory over Towson in a Saturday matinee at SECU Arena near Baltimore.

The Seahawks cranked out their eighth consecutive victory to improve to 11-5 overall and sit alone atop the CAA standings with a perfect 5-0 record. The Tigers had their five-game winning streak halted and stand 14-6 and 5-2.

"Man, these kids are relentless," said Takayo Siddle, UNCW's second-year head coach. "These guys like to get down, but it feels like we're better when we face adversity. I'm stressed out on the sideline, but our guys are tough.

"I told the guys that if you're going to win this game against a well-coached Towson team, you have to be tough. I thought down the stretch our guys were extremely tough and finished the game out in a great way."

For the second straight game, the Seahawks placed five men in double figures. Sophomore guard Shykeim led the way with 18 points followed by senior guard Jaylen Sims with 15, Jaylen Fornes with 13, Jahmari Harvey with 12 and James Baker, Jr., with 10.

Graduate transfer Cam Holden paced the Tigers with 18 points. Senior guard Antonio Rizzuto and junior guard Nicolas Timberlake added 16 points and Charles Thompson had 12.

After storming back in the second half and missing an opportunity to win the game in regulation, the Seahawks outscored the Tigers in the extra session, 16-12, for their second overtime victory in as many tries this season.

The Seahawks trailed by 13 points midway through the second half and rallied to take their first lead since 59 seconds left in the first half when Phillips wheeled inside the paint for a bucket with 2:12 remaining for a 65-64 edge.

Timberlake made the first of two free throws with 15 seconds on the clock to knot the score, but Sims' attempt at a second straight buzzer beater went in and out of the basket. He sank a three-pointer as time expired on Thursday to help the Seahawks upend James Madison in Harrisonburg, 71-70.

Holden, a UT-Martin transfer, scored the first bucket of overtime for the Tigers, but UNCW sank three free throws and converted a layup to forge ahead, 70-67.

UNCW was still clinging to a 75-72 lead with 23 seconds left in the extra period when Towson was charged with a timeout it didn't have. Sims dropped in two free throws on the technical foul to extend the advantage to 77-72 with 16 seconds remaining.

Sims wound up sinking all six of his free throws in the final 16 seconds to ice the victory for the Seahawks, who went 19-of-26 at the free throw stripe. Sims went 11-of-12 at the foul line to go along with his two field goals on the day.

In a back and forth first half, the Tigers, off to their best start in NCAA Division I history, fashioned a 32-30 advantage after leading by as much as seven points in the early going.

Harvey staked the Seahawks to their largest lead of the first period when he drained his first three-pointer of the game with 15:51 left for a 12-9 edge.

Towson responded by scoring 14 of the next 18 points, however, behind the long range shooting of Rizzuto and inside play of Thompson. Rizzuto banged home back-to-back triples and Thompson's driving layup gave the Tigers to a 23-16 cushion with 8:49 left in the first half.

UNCW finished out the half strong to close the gap to two points at the break. Sims connected on a reverse layup and then added the front end of a bonus situation as the Seahawks trailed, 32-30, at intermission.

The Seahawks wrap up the road swing on Monday night with a visit to Boston to face Northeastern.
