Volleyhawks Play Towson Tough In CAA Opener


TOWSON, Md. – Brooke Hanshumaker had six kills and six blocks, but UNCW was edged by Towson, 3-0, in three close sets in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Saturday at SECU Arena.

Towson, the two-time reigning conference champion, improved to 14-1 overall and 2-1 in the CAA while the Seahawks dropped to 1-11 and 0-1.

Hanshumaker, who added two aces, led the Seahawks with 11 points on the afternoon. Brianna Haggerty, meanwhile, had a team and match-high tying eight kills and Katie Lanz chipped in seven. Four different Seahawks had at least six kills.

Towson's Nina Cajlic matched Haggerty with eight kills and finished with five blocks and hit .467 on the match.

Quinn Manley recorded a match-high 13 digs for the Seahawks and is averaging 4.5 digs per set over her last four matches.

Rachel Hess and Kristen Spengler had 10 digs apiece for Towson. Spengler added 18 assists for a double-double.

After falling in the opening set, 25-20, the Seahawks built a 16-11 lead in the second set, but Towson rallied to take a two-set lead with a 25-22 win. There were four lead changes in the third set before Towson prevailed, 25-23.

There were 20 ties and nine lead changes in the second and third sets combined.

The series concludes on Sunday with a 2 p.m. first serve at SECU Arena.
