GREENVILLE, South Carolina – Junior
Mallory Fobes got back to her low-scoring ways by carding a 1-under-par 71 as UNCW moved up to eighth place at the Furman Lady Paladin Invitational following the second round at the Furman University Golf Course on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who were forced to compete with four players after senior
Phu Khine withdrew due to injury, posted a 293 team score to shave eight strokes off their first round result. Furman continues to hold the lead after an impressive 11-under-par showing in the second round.
Fobes, who shot under par for the third time in five rounds this season, elevated her standing in the leaderboard 15 spots and holds a share of 23rd place after registering five birdies during the second round.
Freshman
Malu Brinker enters the final round in a tie for seventh place after ending Saturday's play with a 1-over-par 73. Redshirt freshman
Deborah Spair also carded a 1-over-par second round, moving into a tie for 31st place.
Freshman
Anna Wills moved into a share of 45th place after shooting a 4-over-par 72 in the second round.
"I am so proud of the team for their performance today," Coach
Cindy Ho said. "With Phu having to withdraw due to an injury, everyone had to step up and keep fighting. We had the sixth-best score despite not being able to throw out a score, so I am very pleased with the total team effort.
"We will have to do it again tomorrow, but today showed our team that they are capable of being competitive without one of our top players in the lineup."
The final round of the Furman Lady Paladin Invitational is scheduled for a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday, Sept. 26.
