WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – After an impressive summer that featured three tournament victories, it shouldn't come as a surprise that UNCW junior
Mallory Fobes opened her 2021-22 season with an impressive effort to begin the William & Mary Invitational.
Fobes matched one school record and nearly equaled a second mark to lead the Seahawks to a second place showing through 36 holes at the Kingsmill Resort River Course on Sunday afternoon.
Led by Fobes, the Seahawks carded a 579 score during the opening day of the season and stands just five strokes behind James Madison, which closed play at 2-under-par with a 574 team score.
Fobes, a native of East Bend, N.C., holds a three-stroke lead heading into the final round after completing the tournament's first two rounds at 8-under-par (70-66=136). Fobes, who posted two eagles and 10 birdies, ended the day just one stroke shy of matching UNCW's best individual 36-hole score, a mark she set last year at the River Landing Classic.
She also equaled the single-round school record by firing a 6-under-par 66, which has been accomplished two other times. Fobes had a 6-under-par 66 during the opening round of the River Landing Classic last spring, while
Carmen Perez-Narbon registered a 6-under-par at the 2007 UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational.
Senior
Phu Khine holds third place after posting a pair of 2-under-par rounds to begin the season, while freshman
Malu Brinker is tied for 20th place at 3-over-par (70-77=147).
The final round of the William & Mary Invitational will take place on Monday, Sept. 13, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
