Volleyhawks Edged In Five, Split Two On Saturday


WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW rallied several times in the fifth set and tied the score at 13-all, but Furman scored the final two points to earn a five-set win in the final match of the UNCW Hampton Inn University Classic on Saturday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks finished their opening weekend with a 1-2 mark and finished third in the tournament. Wake Forest earned the tournament title going 3-0 while Furman took second at 2-1. North Alabama dropped all three matches on the weekend.

In the nightcap against Furman, the two teams exchanged wins in the first four sets before the Paladins were able to close it out. Katie Lanz finished with a season-high 19 kills and hit .406 on the match. Annabelle Schall narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 22 assists, one off her career-high of 25, and nine digs.

Furman's Neci Harris, who was named to the All-Tournament team, held match-high honors with 21 kills while Bella Tolone, who also was an All-Tournament honoree, added 16.

The Paladins posted 13 blocks and finished with a 66-59 advantage in digs.

The match featured 24 tied scores, including nine in each of the first and second sets.

Against North Alabama, Brianna Haggerty led UNCW with a career-high 16 kills and rounded out a double-double with 12 digs as UNCW won in four sets. It was her fourth career double-double.

UNCW posted 11 service aces in both matches.

UNCW visits Jacksonville, Fla., for the JU Invitational presented by Hampton Inn East Regency on Sept. 3-4. The Seahawks open the tournament with matches against Drake (1 p.m.) and New Orleans (4 p.m.) on Friday.
