Nanni Scores in Season-Opening Loss to VCU

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Redshirt senior midfielder Morgan Nanni scored UNCW's first goal of the season in the second half, but was not enough as the Seahawks dropped a 2-1 verdict against VCU at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

UNCW, making its regular season debut, dropped to 0-1-0 on the young season while VCU earned its second win in as many games.

VCU sprinted out to a 2-0 lead in the game's opening 14 minutes. Redshirt senior forward Samantha Jerebek netted her first goal of the season in the 13th minute on a blast from just inside the penalty area that sailed into the upper right corner past freshman goalkeeper Kaylie Bierman.

The Rams added to their lead just 90 seconds later when freshman midfielder Kanna Matsuhisa sent a through pass to redshirt senior midfielder Emma Kershner, who scored on a breakaway chance for her first goal of the campaign.

Nanni trimmed the margin to 2-1 in the 60th minute for her first goal of the season. Junior forward Jordan Faveri sent a crossing pass into the penalty area that was deflected by freshman forward Emily Bowbliss. Nanni collected the deflected ball and scored on a shot from inside the penalty area to end the Rams' shutout bid.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Grace Young tallied two saves in the win for VCU, which outshot the Seahawks by a 13-6 margin. Making the first start of her college career, Bierman tallied five saves for UNCW.
