Seahawks Get Sweep Of Key CAA Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Seeking its first conference series sweep of the season, UNCW, backed by six strong innings from Luke Gesell and clutch hitting, topped James Madison, 5-1, on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The win moved the Seahawks to 10-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association and a season-best 10 games over .500 at 26-16. The Dukes, meanwhile, fell to 9-14 overall and 4-8 in the league.

Gesell (6-3) picked up his staff-leading sixth win of the season, allowing a run on seven hits over his six-inning outing. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Ethan Chenault retired nine of the 10 batters he faced for his second save of the season.

Chris Thorburn came off the bench with a pinch-hit two run double in the eighth to break open a one-run game. Kip Brandenburg and Trevor Marsh added RBI singles.

Connor Hartigan paced JMU with two hits, including his fourth home run of the season that tied the game at 1-all in third.

Justin Showalter (1-2) went seven innings and allowed four runs, three earned.

How it happened: With the game tied at one in the sixth, Showalter retired the first two hitters of the inning before Jack Howell singled through the rightside. A fielding error put runners on first and second one batter later. Jac Croom followed with a chopped single up the middle but stayed in the infield. Pinch runner Ron Evans tried to score on the play from second and was safe at the plate when the throw was mishandled at the plate for a 2-1 lead.

Notes: Hartigan's home run was the only earned run allowed this weekend by the Seahawks … The Dukes were 0-3 with RISP while UNCW finished 5-for-8 … Brandenburg and Marsh had two-out RBI singles … Gesell has walked just three hitters over his last four starts, covering 28 innings … The Seahawks have won 12 of their last 13 games against JMU.

Up next: The Seahawks visit NC State on Mar. 11 for a 6 p.m. start.
