Seahawks Erase Early Deficit For 12-5 Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A five-run third inning erased an early deficit as UNCW cruised to a 12-5 series-clinching win over visiting James Madison on Saturday at Brooks Field.

With the win, the Seahawks upped their record to 25-16 overall and 9-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dukes, meanwhile, fell to 9-13 on the season and 4-7 in the league.

Brooks Baldwin held game-high honors with three hits while Matt Suggs and Kip Brandenburg fashioned two-hit games. Brandenburg and Suggs both knocked in three runs with Suggs plating two on his 10th home run of the season.

Adam Smith (5-1) earned the win for UNCW, striking out seven over five innings.

Chase DeLauter collected two hits for the Dukes, who held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. He finished with two runs batted in as did Nick Zona, who had a two-run single in the four-run second.

Reliever Donovan Burke (4-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, in 1.2 innings.

How it happened: UNCW grabbed the lead, 6-4, with a five-run third inning. Baldwin opened the inning with a bunt single and following a walk to Jack Howell, Suggs scored Baldwin with a single to left. Brandenburg scored Howell with a single through the leftside to make it a one-run game. A Duke error scored a pair of runs and Dillon Lifrieri capped the outburst with a RBI ground out.

Notes: Both teams combined for nine two-out RBI's … UNCW finished with four two-out hits and was 6-for-17 with RISP … Seahawk pitching limited JMU to a pair of hits with RISP … UNCW is now 21-7 at home and is 10-3 in its last 13 games.

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Seahawks looking for their first sweep of the CAA season.
