Seahawks Take Opener Of Key Series

UNCW tops JMU, 5-3, on Friday

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Kip Brandenburg collected three hits and Landen Roupp gave the Seahawks a strong start as UNCW opened an important Colonial Athletic Association series against James Madison with a 5-3 win on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks evened their record at 8-8 in the league and 24-16 overall. The Dukes dropped to 9-12 and 4-6.

Roupp (5-4) fought through 6.1 innings, allowing three runs, all unearned. He fanned six, including back-to-back strikeouts in the fifth and sixth innings with the tying run at third base.

Hunter Hodges struck out three in 2.2 innings for this third save of the season.

Brandenburg tied his career-high with three hits and Brooks Baldwin and Dillon Lifrieri both had two hits apiece.

Noah Bridges connected on his sixth home run of the season, which gave UNCW a 5-3 lead in the eighth.

Chase DeLauter led JMU with three hits and Kye Novak added a pair.

Liam McDonnell (1-2) was saddled with the loss.

How it happened: JMU and UNCW both scored three runs in the second, but the Seahawks were able to push a run across in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Cole Weiss doubled with one out in the third and moved to third on a single by Brandenburg. Lifrieri followed with an RBI single through the rightside for the lead.

Notes: UNCW pitchers held JMU to 2-for-13 hitting with RISP … The Dukes were able to land their leadoff hitter on base five times, but that runner would only score once … UNCW has won nine of its last 12 games.

Up next: The series continues Saturday with a 4 p.m. start. The Seahawks will wear special jerseys for the Wilmington Miracle League which will be auctioned off during the game.
