Seahawks Take Pitching Duel To Win Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Luke Gesell tossed eight shutout innings, scattering three hits, as UNCW finished off a key Colonial Athletic Association series win against William & Mary with a 1-0 win on Sunday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who allowed just one run over the final 26 innings of the series, upped their record in the CAA to 7-8 and to 23-16 overall. The Tribe, meanwhile, fell to 12-21 overall and 9-9 in the league.

Gesell, who won his third consecutive start to improve to 5-3 on the season, walked none and didn't allow a Tribe runner to reach second base. He retired 13 consecutive batters at one point and faced just three batters over the minimum.

Ethan Chenault nailed down his first career save for the Seahawks.

Tyler Solomon of William & Mary held game-high honors with two hits.

W&M starter Zach Tsakounis (2-3) nearly matched Gesell's outing, allowing just one run on five hits over 6.2 innings of work.

How it happened: Matt Suggs tripled inside the third base bag with one out in the sixth inning. Cole Weiss followed one batter later and singled up the middle on the first pitch he saw to plate Suggs with the only run of the game.

Notes: Gesell has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last three starts … Brooks Baldwin's hitting streak ended at 13 games … With the win, UNCW gained a split of the two series played with W&M … UNCW pitching held the Tribe to a .103 batting average during this weekend's series.

Up next: The Seahawks are off until May 7 when they host James Madison in the first of another important CAA series for both programs.
