UNCW Moves Into South Lead With Walk-Off

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW scored four runs over the last two innings capped by Trevor Marsh's game-winning single with one out in the ninth as the Seahawks edged the College of Charleston, 7-6, to move into first place in the Colonial Athletic Association South Division on Saturday.

The Seahawks clinched a series win and improved to 28-17 on the season and 12-8 in the CAA. The Cougars, meanwhile, fell to 22-20 and 11-9.

Marsh, who finished with two hits, singled to left and the ball eluded a diving CofC outfielder allowing Cole Weiss to score from second with the winning run. Weiss led the Seahawks with three hits while Brooks Baldwin and Dillon Lifrieri added two apiece. Jac Croom drove in two runs for the Seahawks, who trailed 6-3 entering the bottom of the eighth.

Reliever Ethan Chenault (3-1) was credited with the win.

Joseph Merson and Ari Sechopolous collected three hits each and Harrison Hawkins drove in three runs, including two on his 10th home run of the season in a three-run seventh inning. The Cougars out-hit the Seahawks, 15-14.

Reliever Ty Good (5-5) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, in 4.1 innings.

How it happened: Weiss led off the ninth for the Seahawks with a single to right. Kip Brandenburg bunted him into scoring position. With Marsh coming to the plate, CofC bright in reliever Jordan Carr. Marsh worked the count to 3-1 before sending a sinking line drive into leftfield that would score Weiss with the winning run.

Notes: UNCW got its leadoff hitter on base in six innings and scored in three of them … UNCW turned a season-high four double plays … There were just three extra base hits among the 29 combined hits in the game ... UNCW honored and recognized both the 2020 and 2021 senior classes prior to the game.

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
