It's Marsh Madness As UNCW Clinches South Division

Trevor Marsh's grand slam clinches day one bye for Seahawks at CAA Tournament

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trevor Marsh did it again on Sunday with a tie-breaking grand slam in the bottom of the eighth as UNCW clinched the South Division of the Colonial Athletic Association with an 8-4 win over the College of Charleston at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who have won eight straight conference games, upped their record to 29-17 on the season and 13-8 in the conference. CofC, who led the division entering the weekend, fell to 22-21 overall and 11-10 in the league. It was UNCW's second consecutive series sweep in conference play.

By clinching the South Division, the Seahawks will not have to play on the opening day of the conference tournament set for May 26-29 at Brooks Field.

Marsh, who knocked in the winning run on Saturday in UNCW's 7-6 win, finished with three hits, scored twice and drove in four runs. Joining Marsh with three hits was Brooks Baldwin, who scored twice and set up the grand slam with a bunt single. Matt Suggs and Ron Evans had two hits apiece and Taber Mongero knocked in the tying run in the Seahawks' six-run eighth inning.

Hunter Hodges (2-2) struck out three and allowed just a single in his three innings out of the bullpen.

Jared Kirven had three hits for the Cougars, including his second home run of the season leading off the second inning. Joseph Mershon had two hits and scored twice. Tanner Steffy and Kirven both knocked in a pair of runs.

Connor Campbell (5-3) was tagged with the loss.

How it happened: UNCW trailed 4-2 with one out in the eighth inning. Dillon Lifrieri singled to start the rally and Jac Croom was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. A walk to Evans loaded the bases and Mongero followed with a game-tying two-run single through the left side. Baldwin again loaded the bases with his bunt single. Marsh was up in the count 3-0, but CofC reliever Zach Williams worked it to a full count. Marsh then drove the full count offering over the wall in right field to put UNCW up, 8-4.

Notes: UNCW entered the eighth inning with just one hit with runners on base, but had four such hits in the six-run outburst … UNCW went 2-for-2 with the bases loaded … Seahawk pitchers held CofC to 1-for-7 hitting with RISP … UNCW now leads the all-time series, 19-18.

Up next: The Seahawks visit North Carolina on May 18 for a 6 p.m. start.
