Roupp Rolls Through Cougars In 7-2 Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Landen Roupp struck out nine over seven innings and UNCW moved into a tie for first in the South Division of the Colonial Athletic Association with a 7-2 win over the College of Charleston on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 27-17 overall while the Cougars dipped to 22-19. Both teams are now 11-8 in the league.

Roupp (6-4) allowed one run on seven hits over his seven innings before turning things over to Hunter Hodges, who pitched the final two innings. Roupp recorded seven ground ball outs and did not walk a batter.

Kip Brandenburg and Brooks Baldwin finished with two hits apiece while Cole Weiss knocked in three runs and Trevor Marsh hit his second home run of the season in the sixth inning to give UNCW a 5-1 lead.

CofC starter William Privette (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over six innings of work.

Tanner Steffy held game-high honors with three hits.

How it happened: CofC took a 1-0 lead in the third, scoring on a wild pitch. UNCW, however, plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Baldwin singled home the tying run and Weiss broke the deadlock with a two-run single with two outs later in the inning.

Notes: UNCW scored a runner from third with less than two outs three times … Roupp and Hodges held CofC to one hit with two outs and just one hit with runners on base … Hodges has allowed just three hit in 16 innings out of the bullpen this season.

Up next: The series continues Saturday when the Seahawks recognize both the 2020 and 2021 senior classes prior to the game.
