Smith, Overton Combine On 1-Hitter

Seahawks even series with Tribe with 11-0 win

WILMIGNTON, N.C. – UNCW's Adam Smith and Noah Overton combined to strikeout eight and limit William & Mary to one hit in an 11-0 win over the Tribe on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks, who improved to 18-7 at home this season, improved to 22-16 overall and 6-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. W&M dropped to 4-13 on the road and 12-20 and 9-8.

Ben Williamson led off the game with a clean single to right off Smith and that would be the only hit on the afternoon for the Tribe.

Smith (4-1) went a career-long seven innings, walked three and struck out five. He faced just one batter over the minimum from the second through seventh innings. Overton came on to close out the game, striking out two.

Kip Brandenburg had a pair of hits and knocked in two runs. Taber Mongero, meanwhile, drove in three, including two in a six-run fifth inning for the Seahawks.

Adding two hits were Brooks Baldwin, Matt Suggs, and Dillon Lifrieri.

Justin Pearson (3-5) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, while pitching into the fifth inning.

How it happened: The Seahawks plated two in the second for the early lead. Kevin Pitarra singled through the leftside to score the first run and Mongero capped the scoring with a safety squeeze.

Notes: The last UNCW combined one hitter was on April 10, 2019 at Campbell … Baldwin now has a 13-game hitting streak … UNCW's six-run fifth was a season-high for runs.

Up next: The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
