Women's Tennis Team Wins 4th Straight

BALTIMORE, Maryland – The UNCW women's tennis team kicked off a two-match swing to Maryland by blanking Loyola, 7-0, in a non-conference women's tennis match at the McClure Tennis Center on Thursday.
 
The Seahawks won their fourth consecutive match and improved to 9-7 this spring. The team registered its fourth shutout of the campaign and moved to 4-3 on the road.
 
Patriot League member Loyola now stands 6-3 after losing for only the second time in six matches at home this year.
 
In the first meeting between the two schools in women's tennis, the Seahawks, closing out the regular season with three road tests, dominated from start to finish, winning the doubles point and then sweeping all six singles matches.
 
UNCW secured the doubles point for the 13th time in 16 matches when Anna Daniels and Lauren Robbins trimmed Loyola's Brooke Santoriello and Genevieve Wurtz, 6-3 at the No 3 position.
 
In singles, Celeste Matute became the sixth different Seahawk to clinch a match when the veteran from Islip, N.Y., ousted Loyola's Abigail Thompson, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
 
The Seahawks cap their road trip with a visit to Towson on Friday for a 1 p.m. match with the Tigers. UNCW then plays at Charleston on Apr. 17 before competing in the CAA Women's Tennis Championships on Apr. 22-25 in Williamsburg, Va.
