Seahawks Dominate Cougars In CAA Match

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW men's tennis team bounced back from Friday's stinging loss to No. 32 VCU by dominating Colonial Athletic Association rival Charleston, 6-1, early Saturday at the UNCW courts.
 
The Seahawks, 6-1 at home, extended their record to 9-4 this spring by taking the second leg of a four-match home stand. The Cougars fell to 6-5 and 6-4 on the road.
 
In the lone regular season CAA matchup for both teams, UNCW and CofC battled under sunny skies and temperatures in the low 50s. The Seahawks picked up the doubles point for the third consecutive match and won the first four singles matches off the court to collect the victory.
 
Freshman Beckhzod Rasamatov and junior Dillon Gooch, playing No. 2 doubles, nailed down the early point for the Seahawks with a 6-2 triumph over CofC's Jake Fraunfelder and Karl Mosterd. After Daniel Groom (No. 3), Bruno Caula (No. 1) secured their matches in straight sets, junior Davide Innocenti pounded CofC's Noah Borges, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles to clinch match point for the second time this season.
 
UNCW has four matches remaining in the regular season before the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships on Apr. 29-May 2 in Williamsburg. The Seahawks next entertain Gardner-Webb on Sunday, Apr. 11, at noon.
 
Charleston, meanwhile, visits Georgia Southern on Friday, Apr. 9, for a 1 p.m. match with the Eagles.
