ELON, N.C. – After tying the game in the ninth with two out, Elon plated an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th to slip past UNCW, 2-1, in the opener of a key Colonial Athletic Association series Friday at Latham Park.
The Phoenix (12-16, 5-5 CAA) snapped a three-game losing streak with the extra inning win while the Seahawks (18-14, 4-6 CAA) saw their own three-game winning streak halted.
UNCW starter
Landen Roupp didn't figure in the decision despite allowing just one run over 8.2 innings and striking out a career-high 12 batters.
Noah Bridges homered in the top of the fourth to give UNCW a 1-0 lead.
Elon reliever Trevor Kirk (3-1) was credited with the win after stranding the go-ahead run on third in the top of the 10th.
Hunter Hodges was saddled with the tough luck loss to fall to 1-2.
How it happened: With the international tiebreaker in effect and a runner at second to open the bottom of the 10th, Jack Roberts laid down a sacrifice bunt. Parker Haskins came around to score with winning run when the throw to first base wasn't handled cleanly.
Notes: Both teams stranded seven runners on base … UNCW is 0-5 in one-run games in conference play … Elon has won both extra inning games with the Seahawks this season.
Up next: With the anticipation of inclement weather on Saturday, the second and third games of the series will be played on Sunday at noon.
