Seahawks Gain Split Of Sunday Twinbill


ELON, N.C. – Cole Weiss and Brooks Baldwin each had two-run home runs and UNCW held off a furious Elon comeback for a 6-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Latham Park.

The Seahawks improved to 19-15 overall and 5-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Phoenix, who won the series with an extra inning victor in game 1, moved to 13-17 and 6-6 in the CAA.

UNCW overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the nightcap with two runs the third through fifth innings for a 6-1 lead.

Baldwin's third homer of the afternoon came in the third and Dillon Lifrieri doubled in a run to highlight the fourth inning scoring.

Weiss' fifth homer of the season came in the fifth and pushed UNCW's lead to 6-1.

Luke Gesell (4-3) earned the win with a solid start of seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out six.

Carter Holjes closed out the game for his first save.

In the opener, Baldwin homered twice and drove in four runs, but the Seahawks were unable to hold on to a ninth inning lead before falling in 12 innings, 7-6.

Up next: The Seahawks open a midweek non-conference series with Coastal Carolina on Apr. 27 in Conway, S.C., at 6 p.m. The two teams them close out the series with a 6 p.m. start on Apr. 28 at Brooks Field.
