Seahawks Win Third Straight

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Zoe Huffman rallied from a one-set deficit to win at No. 4 singles and power the UNCW women's tennis team over Charleston, 4-3, in the home finale for the Seahawks early Friday at the UNCW courts.
 
The Seahawks, concluding a four-match home stand, reeled off their third consecutive victory to hike their record to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cougars dropped to 8-10 and 1-1.
 
WTennisVsCharlestonUNCW finished with a 5-2 home record after securing the crucial doubles point and splitting the six singles matches. The Seahawks have won the doubles point in 11 of 15 matches this season.
 
Huffman figured in two big wins on the day for the Seahawks. She teamed up with graduate transfer Charlotte Madison to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 verdict over CofC's Clara Errard and Halli Trinkle and then overcame Kate Earnhardt in a three-set thriller at No. 4 singles to clinch a match for the second time this season.
 
After falling in the first set, 6-4, Huffman still trailed 6-5 in the second set before forcing a tie-breaker and winning, 7-5 in the breaker. The Maiden, N.C., product then sailed past Earnhardt in the decisive set, 6-1, to send UNCW's seniors out with a victory.
 
Madson defeated Eva Nyikos at the top of the lineup, 6-3, 6-2, to snap a nine-match winning streak by the senior from Neusiedl Am See, Austria.
 
The Seahawks close out the regular season with matches at Loyola, Md. (Apr. 8), Towson (Apr. 9) and Charleston (Apr. 17).
