ROSWELL, Georgia – The UNCW men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches by rallying past former Colonial Athletic Association rival Georgia State, 4-2, in a non-conference match early Sunday at Horseshoe Bend Country Club.
The Seahawks hiked their record to 12-4 and stand 6-7 lifetime against the Panthers after meeting the Atlanta-based club for the first time since 2019. GSU owns a 14-7 record after dropping its regular season finale.
UNCW lost the doubles point, but stormed back with four singles victories to pull out the neutral-site win. Senior
Michael Copeland notched the clincher for the second this season when the Johannesburg, South Africa, netter outlasted GSU's Patrick Lazo, 4-6, 6-2, 5-2, at No. 5 singles.
Daniel Groom (No. 2),
Bekhzod Rasamatov (No. 3) and
Leonardo Sprovieri (No. 6) nailed down the other singles victories for the Seahawks.
In doubles, UNCW's top tandem of Groom and
Bruno Caula upset No. 55 Harvey Maughn and Kevni Huynh, 7-5, to improve to 8-3 on the season.
The Seahawks close out the regular season at Clemson on Monday (April 19) in a 1 p.m. match before competing in the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championships on Apr. 29-May 2 in Williamsburg, Va.
