Baldwin Finishes Off Sweep Of UNCA

Seventh inning homer gives UNCW 4-3 lead

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Brooks Baldwin's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh erased a 3-2 deficit as UNCW finished off a weekend series sweep of UNC Asheville on Sunday with a 4-3 win at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 4-7 in one-run games with the win and moved to 18-13 with the sweep. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, dropped to 10-18 overall and 4-13 on the road.

The round tripper was Baldwin's second hit of the afternoon and his seventh home run of the season.

Kip Brandenburg also homered in the seventh to bring the Seahawks to within, 3-2.

Starter Luke Gesell (3-3) earned the win, striking out 10 over seven innings. He scattered nine hits and did not walk a batter. Jacob Shafer nailed down his first save of the season, striking out three over two innings.
Chris Banks, one of nine Bulldog pitchers used in the game, took the loss to slip to 2-1.

Sebastian Dunn and Grayson Preslar held game-high honors with three hits apiece. Dunn drove in all three runs with two-out hits.

How it happened: UNCA reliever Chris Banks (2-1) retired the first two Seahawk hitters on fly balls to center, but clipped Matt Suggs with a first-pitch fastball to put the tying run on base. Baldwin fell behind 0-2 but connected on the third pitch for a home run to deep right field.

Notes: Gesell spotted UNCA a 3-0 lead through three, but followed with four shutout frames … UNCW starting pitchers combined for 21 strikeouts over 22 innings, allowed 14 hits, one for extra bases, allowed three runs and walked just one … Time wise, the three games played combined for seven hours and one minute.
