Smith Dominates In First Career Start

Righthander goes career-long six innings

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Adam Smith pitched six innings of two-hit, shutout baseball in his first career start to help UNCW knock off visiting UNC Asheville, 3-2, and clinch the weekend series on Saturday at Brooks Field.

UNCW held off the Bulldogs in the ninth to improve to 17-13 while UNCA fell to 10-18.

Smith (3-1), who made 28 appearances out of the bullpen over the last two-plus seasons, retired the first six hitters he faced and allowed just one base runner to get into scoring position. He faced one batter over the minimum, walked one and struck out one.

Offensively, UNCW's Dillon Lifrieri and Matt Suggs were the only multi-hit players on the afternoon.

Jacob Edwards (2-5) was saddled with the loss for UNCW, but allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out four in 5.2 innings.

Hunter Hodges pitched the ninth for his second save of the season.

How it happened: It was a pitcher's duel through five innings, but the Seahawks struck twice in the sixth to take the lead. Taber Mongero, who opened the inning with a walk, scored from second on a UNCA throwing error. Suggs later scored on a Lifrieri single for a 2-0 lead.

Notes: Both teams combined to strand seven runners and UNCA turned four of the game's five double plays … Saturday's game time of 2:08 was fastest for the Seahawks since Apr. 25, 2014, when Mat Batts tossed a complete game win in 1:58 at Delaware … Brooks Baldwin has a five-game hitting streak and Suggs is at four games.

Up next: The Seahawks and Bulldogs close out the series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
