Rally Falls Short As Seahawks Drop Opener, 7-6

STILLWATER, Okla. – UNCW scored five runs in the top of the ninth, but 13th-ranked Oklahoma State held on for a 7-6 win in the first game of Saturday doubleheader at O'Brate Stadium.

The Cowboys improved to 19-7-1 and the Seahawks dropped to 15-10.

OSU starter Parker Scott (6-1) rolled through the UNCW lineup, at one point retiring 10 consecutive batters between the third and seventh innings. He faced just three more than the minimum.

UNCW starter Landen Roupp (3-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs over 4.2 innings.

Taber Mongero's first home run of his career, coming in the top of the eighth, averted the OSU shutout bid. Mongero and Jac Croom finished with two hits apiece as UNCW out-hit the Cowboys, 8-5.

How it happened: The Cowboys jumped on Roupp for four runs on a pair of home runs in the bottom of the first. Max Hewitt homered two batters into the inning and Carson McCusker belted a two-run shot of his own with two outs later in the frame.

Notes: Roupp walked a career-high and allowed two home runs … Freshman reliever Carter Holjes allowed two hits over a career-long three innings.

Up next: The two play the nightcap of the doubleheader this evening at 6 p.m. CST.
