Seahawks Stay Perfect At Home

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman Gabe Hurtado became the fourth different player to clinch a match this spring as the UNCW men's tennis team tripped up visiting North Florida, 5-2, early Tuesday at the UNCW courts.
 
The Seahawks remained perfect at home in four tries and increased their record to 5-2 this spring. The Ospreys dropped their fifth straight match and fell to 2-6 on the season.
 
UNCW secured the early doubles point for the fifth time this season when the No. 1 pair of Bruno Caula and Leo Sprovieri slipped past UNF's Dominik Barton and Matt Carroll, 7-6 (3).
 
In singles play, the Seahawks won three of the first four matches off the court to nail down their third straight victory. Caula zipped past Barton at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, and freshman Bekhzad Rasamatov dispatched Nilo Duarte, 6-3, 7-6 (5) at the No. 2 slot to give UNCW a 3-0 advantage.
 
UNF's Rodrigo Crespo picked up a point for the Ospreys at No. 4 singles, but Hurtado outlasted Carroll, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to clinch the match.
 
"I'm very proud of our group today," said UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "We were able to see some guys in different positions and they did a very good job of rising to the challenge. Starting with doubles, Bruno and Leo were able to fight off a couple match points to clinch the doubles point in a tiebreaker.
 
"We had three freshmen in the lineup and all three players great. Beka and Gabe really stepped up and won some huge matches. We have a lot of respect for UNF and are very proud of our performance today."
 
The Seahawks head back on the road on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. test against Georgia Southern in Conway, S.C.
