Hope You Didn't Leave Early, UNCW Wins 9-8

Seahawks erased an 8-0 deficit after three inning on Sunday

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Trevor Marsh's game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth capped an eight-run rally as UNCW clipped Cincinnati, 9-8, to earn a series split with the Bearcats at Brooks Field on Sunday.

The Seahawks halted a brief two-game skid and moved to 7-3 on the season. The Bearcats, who built an 8-0 lead after three innings, dipped to 3-7.

UNCW managed six hits on the afternoon, three going for extra bases, but worked nine walks.

Marsh was joined by Noah Bridges, who belted a game-tying grand slam in the eighth inning.

Reliever Adam Smith (2-0) was credited with the win, pitching out of a jam in the top of the ninth inning.

Wyatt Stapp led UC with four hits while Jake Murray and Cole Harting chipped in two apiece. The Bearcats homered to lead off the first three innings, including Eric Santiago, who homered on the first pitch of the game. Joe Powell homered to lead off the second and Harting did the same in the third.

UC starter Garrett Schoenle didn't figure in the decision but fanned 11 Seahawks and allowed one run on two hits and a pair of walks over five innings.

Reliever Zach Segal (0-2) took the loss.

How it happened: The Seahawks loaded the bases with three consecutive walks in the eighth inning setting the stage for Bridges, who homered on a 2-2 breaking ball to draw the Seahawks even at 8-all. In the ninth, Marsh ended the game with his first career home run with one out.

Notes: Kip Brandenburg doubled in the sixth inning as his hitting streak moved to a career-long 12 games, dating back to last season … The UNCW bullpen combined to allow three runs on seven hits over the final 7.2 innings … Ethan Chenault struck out two and allowed a run over his three innings of relief … Carter Holjes tossed a pair of shutout innings in his collegiate debut for the Seahawks.

Up next: The Seahawks host Appalachian State for three games beginning on Mar. 12 with a 6 p.m. start at Brooks Field.
