UNCW righthander rolls through App State in 6-1 win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Landen Roupp struck out eight over a dominant seven innings and Matt Suggs and Kip Brandenburg both homered as UNCW shutdown Appalachian State, 6-1, on Friday at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks improved to 8-3 on the season while the Mountaineers dropped to 6-6 with their fourth consecutive loss.

Roupp (1-2) scattered five hits and allowed one run while walking three in a season-best seven innings. The righthander allowed a run in the third but settled down to nine of the next 10 batters he faced to get to the seventh.

Brandenburg finished with two hits, including his first home run of the season that gave UNCW a 6-1 lead in the eighth. Suggs belted his third home run of the season, a three-run shot, in UNCW's four-run fourth inning.

Tyler Tuthill (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, over six innings of work.

Andrew Greckel had two hits to pace the ASU lineup.

How it happened: UNCW trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth when it exploded for four runs. Jac Croom scored the tying run on a wild pitch and Suggs followed with a three-run shot to left off Tuthill for a 4-1 lead.

Notes: The Seahawks faced a lefthanded starter for the fifth consecutive game … Brandenburg pushed his career-long hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the sixth inning … UNCW reliever Hunter Hodges has opened his collegiate career with 13 strikeouts in his first 10 innings pitched.

Up next: The Seahawks and Mountaineers continue their series on Saturday with a 4 p.m. start at Brooks Field.
