Volleyhawks Knocked Off In Five Sets By Elon

ELON, N.C. – Brooke Hanshumaker had a career-high 16 kills and Katie Lanz added 14, but UNCW was unable to hold onto a 2-1 lead as it lost in five sets at Elon on Saturday at the Scharr Center.

For Elon, it was the first win of the season and the Phoenix improved to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks, however, remain winless at 0-5 and 0-3 in the conference. UNCW has suffered losses in four five-set matches.

Hanshumaker finished with a .444 hitting average with four errors in 27 attacks. She added three blocks. Lanz fashioned a double-double adding 10 digs.

Jadyn Barry collected a match-high 22 digs for the Seahawks.

Leah Daniel led all hitters with 19 kills for the Phoenix and was joined in double-figures by Haylie Clark and Gabi Croll.

UNCW managed to out hit and out block Elon by narrow margins but was undone by 10 service errors.

Up next: The two programs close out the series on Sunday with a 3 p.m. start.
