GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Freshman shortstop
Tayler Vitola went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, but it was not enough as UNCG completed a sweep of its three-game series against UNCW with a 9-3 victory over the Seahawks at the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans, who won their seventh straight game, upped their record to 7-4 on the season. The Seahawks, meanwhile, dropped to 2-7 after losing their fourth game in a row.
Vitola, who extended her hitting streak to four games, was one of four Seahawks to record a hit in the contest. Junior utility player
Gabriella Hessenthaler went 1-for-3 while junior pitcher/infielder
Janel Gamache also posted a 1-for-3 effort with two runs batted in.
Senior outfielder
Hunter Bizzell contributed a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning.
UNCG tallied 11 hits, including four home runs, in the victory with 10 players recording at least one hit.
How It Happened: UNCW took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning when Vitola scored on a wild pitch, but UNCG answered with seven unanswered runs in its first three trips to the plate for a 7-1 lead the Spartans did not relinquish.
Up Next: UNCW returns to Boseman Field on Saturday, Mar. 13, to open a four-game series against Ohio University. The Seahawks and Bobcats will play a doubleheader starting at noon.
