Ohio Claims Doubleheader Sweep Over Seahawks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Juniors Janel Gamache and Gabriella Hessenthaler each tallied four hits and combined to score three runs, but it was not enough as UNCW dropped a pair of games to open its four-game series against Ohio on Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks, who fell to 2-9 on the season, lost by a 6-4 margin in the opener before a 7-2 setback in the nightcap. Ohio improved to 2-5 with the doubleheader sweep.

Gamache paced the Seahawks by going 4-for-7 in the twinbill with two runs scored and her second home run of the season. Hessenthaler, meanwhile, was 4-for-8 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Freshman shortstop Tayler Vitola added three hits, including a double, and scored two runs.

How It Happened – Game 1: Ohio broke a 3-all tie in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs on a bunt single and an error by the Seahawks. UNCW trimmed the deficit to 5-4 on an RBI single by junior Casey Jones in the fifth inning before the Bobcats added an insurance run in the sixth inning.

How It Happened – Game 2: The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly before Gamache's single in the bottom of the frame cut the margin to 2-1. But, Ohio responded with five unanswered runs to take a 7-1 lead.

Notes of Interest: Vitola extended her hitting streak to six straight games after her three-hit performance … The Middletown, Del., product has hit safely in 10-of-11 games this year … Gamache and Hessenthaler have each hit safely in four consecutive contests … The trio combined for 11 of UNCW's 16 hits in the doubleheader … Ohio was 10-for-12 in stolen base attempts in the doubleheader and collected 24 hits, including five doubles.

Up Next: UNCW and Ohio complete the four-game weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday, Mar. 14, starting at noon.
